While browsing the web i found an interessting entry from Moses on his blog. He is asking his visitors and readers about their hosting, their decisions why they choose their current hosts, and i would like to contribute.

What we want

It’s human nature to want for more. We always look for the best deal, the best bang for buck whether it’s shopping for food at the supermarket or using price comparison sites for checking out the cheapest fare or television. And as anyone who owns their own domain are probably quite net-savvy, webhosts are under pressure to competitively price themselves.

If you are running or plan on running a WordPress powered blog on your own, the most important ingredient to consider is selecting a reputable Web Host, selecting a Web Host just because of their attractive price offer might prove to be a nightmare…

I’ve been with (mt)mediaTemple for quite a while now, who’s front page pricing of $8 per month for a crazy 1TB of bandwidth and 20GB of storage is incredibly tempting especially when you look back just 2 years ago and compare what you were paying and getting then with now. I started with a (ss) SharedServer and migrated to a (gs) GridServer for free. Of course, the announced specs should only play a tiny part in your decision making process but fortunately, I’ve been more than happy with (mt).

Storage, bandwidth and (material) needs

Whether you are looking to host a personal site or production-level web applications, (mt) Media Temple has a number of competitive plans that will most-likely match or exceed your project requirements. (mt) is the best solution for me - im running 2 portfolios, a gallery  and database and this blog on the (gs). It´s so easy do administrate the pages and scripts, its so easy to configure each project and back it up. The (gs) comes with an all new webpanel, 1 click installations and gridcontainers, and its possible to add (unlimited) alternate domains.

How big is yours?

I mean website! Perhaps we give to much weight to numbers and concerns about planning for unforeseen circumstances whereas we rarely even strain the packages that we pay for. But then inside those limits how much do we actually use? Here´s what i actually use on my (gs) and for this site.

  • 127,1mb used by the db
  • 712mb disk space used (portfolio, blog, personalpage, gallery and 2 hosted projects)
  • currently 329mb of bandwidth per day or 1gb per month

In other words, I use less than 0.02% of my allocated storage space and bandwidth. But its always the same question, what makes you happy and what you really need…

Some need 10 Terrabytes of disc storage and 45 Yottabytes of data transfer, but a realistic host will set realistic limits. The world of web hosting is magical and wonderous. Having a website lets you show the world extremely important things like pictures of your cats, and also lets you share your not-at-all-crazy political views with the world. Or something like that.

Happy as a peacock

What i like most on (mt) is how easy to handle and administrate alternate domains and projects on one single server, the kickass support helps you out with problems and questions, a huge knowledgebase and the GPU and stats for your site. These guys rock!

(mt)

(mt) doesn’t advertise and doesn’t pay commissions for linking to it, as another leading host does. Its marketing plan can be summarized in three words: host great sites. - it follows its plan, hosting legions of finely crafted independent sites. It likely hosts many of your favorites.
I like (mt) for its involvement in this community, but not enough to make me switch hosts. I switched for the service. PHP, MySQL. (mt) has the latest stable releases and will set them up for you or let you do it yourself.

I recommend Media Temple without reservation. Their new control panel gives you tremendous power over your domain. Create subdomains, mail accounts, and much more. If you prefer, they will do everything for you — and they’ll even hold your hand and dab your tears if it’s your first time and you need them to be gentle. There is more to it then just really fast servers!
